Welcome Adam Amin
Since 1991, the Chicago Bulls play by play has been handled by Neil Funk. The first 17 years as a radio play by play announcer, then the last 12 on TV. Neil became a legend in those 29 years, but the 2019–20 was the last for Neil Funk as he announced his retirement following the season. With the season suspended, and the Bulls season likely over the Bulls went ahead and announced Funk’s successor. And that is Adam Amin.
Being a play by play commentator is not easy, requires much experience to do at a high level. Adam’s resume surely seems to be good enough. NBC Sports Chicago’s KC Johnson wrote a great article covering such resume, which I recommend. But being a play by play announcer to a specific team versus a national audience carries a different weight. While most of it is the same, there is one major difference. And that is the audience. When Amin announces games, he will be mainly doing it to Chicago Bulls fans.
This is one reason why Bulls fans love Stacey King so much. While I’m sure people have many reasons, I imagine the main reason is Bulls fans can feel Stacey’s passion for the Bulls. Stacey is a true Bulls fan. His passion translates through the TV. He represents how Bulls’ fans feel in the moment. Fans are passionate and they like to hear the same. Adam Amin is a Chicagoan. Adam was born in Chicago. Grew up watching the Bulls. Has memories of watching Bulls games with his father. While there isn’t one way to determine passion for one team, Adam checks a lot of boxes. He has the resume but mainly the passion to be a great play by play commentator for the Chicago Bulls. Something Bulls president Michael Reisndorf said he noticed in their interview with Adam. Adam also filled in for Neil Funk at times during the previous season, so there is some familiarity between him and Stacey King.
When the 2020–21 starts, the Bulls will have a brand new play by play commentator. Which will take some getting used too, Funk was the guy on TV the past 12 year. Hopefully the Bulls have found their guy, for the next 12.
